Program Descriptions and Prerequisites
Please note that some classes listed below are combined with U of T student programs (17+) and Junior Blues programs (under 18).
CPR-C with AED
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) courses teach skills to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults, children and babies. They meet workplace safety requirements and include an automated external defibrillator (AED) training. Courses offered through the Lifesaving Society and Canadian Red Cross.
Prerequisites, completion requirements and materials
Prerequisites: None required.
Completion requirements: Participants must be able to understand and demonstrate all required skills, including critical steps; maintain 100% attendance and participation; achieve a minimum grade of 75% on a written, closed-book knowledge evaluation (Red Cross only); and adhere to the Fundamental Principles.
Required materials: CPR pocket mask with a one-way valve (participants must bring their own or purchase one at registration)
Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED (Canadian Red Cross)
This Canadian Red Cross blended course provides first aid and CPR-C training for workplace requirements or emergency preparedness at home. It includes an eight-hour online module, to be completed before the classroom session.
Prerequisites, completion requirements and materials
Prerequisites: Completion of CRC Standard First Aid and CPR-C online module; participants must be at least 17 years old.
Completion requirements: Participants must be able to understand and demonstrate all required skills, including critical steps; maintain 100% attendance and participation; achieve a minimum grade of 75% on a written, closed-book knowledge evaluation; and adhere to the Fundamental Principles.
Required materials: CPR pocket mask with a one-way valve. Participants must bring their own or purchase one at registration.

Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED (Lifesaving Society)
Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training in first aid and CPR, covering legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal, heat, cold, bone, joint and chest injuries, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C certification.
Prerequisites, completion requirements and materials
Prerequisites: None.
Completion requirements: Participants must be able to understand and demonstrate all required skills, including critical steps; maintain 100% attendance and participation; achieve a minimum grade of 75% on a written knowledge evaluation; and adhere to the Fundamental Principles.
Candidate recognition: Certification card (a temporary card is issued by the instructor upon successful completion; a permanent card is mailed by the Lifesaving Society within 90 days).

Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED Re-certification
The Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) allows Standard First Aid holders to recertify only once. After that, the full course must be repeated, with renewals alternating between recertifications and full courses. If a certification is more than three years old, the full course is required.
Prerequisites, completion requirements and materials
Prerequisites: Current Lifesaving Society (LSS) or Canadian Red Cross (CRC) Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification. Recertification must be completed with the same certifying body as the current certification.

Certification Course Requirements and Policies
Enrollment requirements
All leadership courses require 100 per cent active participation and attendance, including in-water participation for aquatics courses. Please ensure all prerequisites are met before enrolling and be prepared to show proof at the first class.
Course policies
Certification courses are pass/fail and include an exam date. Participants must be self-motivated and commit to a learning contract at the first class.
Participants who are unsuccessful in passing a certification course must re-take the entire course; candidates will not be permitted the opportunity to be re-examined.
Fitness components
Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard courses all contain a mandatory fitness component. Visit the Lifesaving Society for details: Bronze Star and National Lifeguard.
Refunds and transfers
Refunds or transfers must be requested at least four days prior to the start of the course, or a full fee will apply.
Privacy notice
Certifications are issued by the Lifesaving Society and the Canadian Red Cross. The Sport & Rec/Junior Blues Program is required to disclose names, addresses and birth dates for all participants in order to issue certificates.
