KPE 6-week Summer Course including 2-week international field trip

“Sport as a means to promote education, health, development and peace,” was adopted in 2005 calling for various stakeholders to promote sport as part of development policies and programs and recognized sport as a means of achieving the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. The amalgam of organizations doing this kind of work is now referred to as the ‘Sport for Development and Peace’ (SDP) sector.
This course is designed to facilitate an informed and critical analysis of SDP in social, institutional and practical terms. Thus, the course will encourage consideration of both the possibilities and limitations of approaching development and peace through sport.
About the Experience
KPE 401 is a course offered by KPE in partnership with the University of West Indies, Mona Campus. The course starts with lectures in Toronto and include 2 weeks of fieldwork in Jamaica. The course is offered in the summer term.
Activities in Jamaica are full-time and students must participate in all activities as a group. They include:
- Academic – lectures, de-brief sessions, sport narratives, Sport and Culture presentation
- Sport for Social Development – Child Resiliency Project, Fight for Peace
- Community Sport – Arnett Gardens football club, cricket, Olympic training sites
- Cultural Immersion – Culture Yaad visit, Bob Marley Museum, Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, dance and speaking Jamaican classes
- Recreational – Discovery Bay, Cranbrook Farm, Picnic at Hollywell Park
You can expect warm and humid weather. Average temperature in May is 28°C, from an average low of 25°C to a maximum of 30°C. It’s also the start of the rainy season and rainfall occurs mainly in the form of thunderstorms in late afternoon.
Accommodation will be on campus in a student residence hall in double occupancy rooms. For the overnight excursion at Discovery Bay Marine Lab, accommodation will be a dormitory.
Students will travel as a group. This includes a 4-hour direct flight from Toronto to Jamaica, airport pick-up and transportation to all scheduled activities. Students will arrive in Kingston and return from Montego Bay. Transportation not related to course activities is not included.

- Pre-requisite: KPE200H1
- Be a BKin full-time student in good standing
- Be approved by the selection committee
You’ll also need to complete the pre-departure requirements before you go on the study tour.
Application Process
The application process is now open! KPE401 Application for 2024 - apply by January 15, 2024.
Students are encouraged to attend an info session or meet with the Program Coordinator to learn more about the course.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and early applications are encouraged. The application process consists of submitting an application form and an interview. Students must confirm their participation and pay a non-refundable deposit. Upon confirmation, the Registrar’s Office staff will enrol students in the course on ACORN.
Program Fees and Costs
Total cost: $ 2,601 (program fees) + U of T tuition
We encourage students to apply for needs-based funding via IE Awards +.
Program fees include:
- Round-trip direct flights
- Accommodation
- Program-related transportation
- Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
- Sport tourism and cultural tours
Program fees DO NOT include:
- U of T tuition
- Incidentals as personal mobile communication, additional meals and snacks, personal transportation, immunizations and Visas if applicable, tips, etc.
Payment and Refund Policy
To confirm your participation in the program, a non-refundable program deposit is required, which will be deducted from the total program fees.
Without exception, students who do not pay for the program in full by the program start date will not be allowed to participate in the program.
Students who decide to withdraw their application must submit a request in writing by email to international.kpe@utoronto.ca. Any reimbursements of program fees will be credited to student accounts once a withdrawal has been processed.
Should KPE cancel the program due to under-enrollment, 100% of the student’s payments will be refunded.
Pre-departure
All students participating in this program must complete the following:
- Register on U of T Safety Abroad Registry
- Complete U of T Safety Abroad pre-departure orientation
- Attend KPE 401 pre-departure session
