Getting a workout on campus doesn’t have to mean joining a team or hitting the gym. Fun Fridays, a new event series focused on non-traditional sports, is showing U of T students the lighter side of physical activity.

Each Fun Friday features a variation on a familiar sport – like innertube water polo, pictured above, or bubble soccer, in which players wear large transparent bubbles that work like bouncy suits of armor.

“Bubble soccer was so much fun!” said James O’Brien, a fourth-year kinesiology student. “I went with a bunch of friends and we all had a great time running into each other with reckless abandon. There's nothing like running into someone and sending them flying or getting flipped head over heels in a giant air bubble to de-stress and escape from the demands of university.”

A collaboration between MoveU and U of T Intramurals, Fun Fridays are aimed at students looking for a social way to get active, but aren’t necessarily up for the commitment and competition of intramural sports.

“We began the Fun Friday events as a way to help students to decompress at the end of a week of studies and academic pursuits,” said John Robb, manager of intramurals at U of T. “The idea is to have some activities that are new for everyone, so that anyone can come and play and not have to worry about how good they are. For example, our first event was bubble soccer. There are not very many bubble soccer experts! Last week we had innertube water polo – again, not many innertube experts out there.”

Fun Fridays happen once each month. The next event is Sitting Volleyball, on Friday, December 4, from 9 to 11 pm in Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

“We don’t keep score or have champions or trophies at Fun Fridays,” Robb said. “Just come out and have a good time!”
