Five ways to keep active and healthy in 2016

04/01/2016

If you’re like many people, your New Year’s resolution likely includes getting fit and staying healthy. Perhaps you’re also interested in learning a new skill, meeting new people or decreasing school and work stress.

But how do you make time in your schedule and make your resolution last? Whether you drop in for a 15-minute workout at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport, join a 50-minute class at the Athletic Centre, or go skating at the Varsity Centre arena, the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education has a fit for everyone.

“I definitely use physical activity to manage stress," says undergraduate student Najiba Sardar. "Every time my course load gets a little bit overwhelming, including extracurriculars, it’s nice to go lift a little bit, take a quick run and then go back to class.”

See how Najiba Sardar is staying active in 2016.

What’s your fit? Below are five ideas for how to shake off the holiday festivities and get moving in 2016:

1. The BIG 5 Muscle & Strength
Want to improve your strength, coordination, body composition and confidence in the gym? In the BIG 5 Muscle & Strength class you’ll work all your major muscle groups with a winning combination of squats, deadlifts, bench presses, pull ups and planks. Learn training protocols to perfect your form and rev up your metabolism.

2. Parkour Gymnastics Basics
Imagine starting 2016 off with superhuman skills. Explore the building blocks of flipping and running up walls like a superhero with Parkour Gymnastics Basics. In this course, you’ll learn how to safely jump, land, flip, climb and balance.

3. Golf
Even though it’s winter, it’s never too early to get ready for the greens. Whether you’re learning basic mechanics or improving your swing and ball control, we’ve got a course for you.

During the winter, U of T students and members can drop in to the Varsity Centre driving range on specific days. We also offer affordable private lessons with certified C.P.G.A. professionals.

4. Cycle Fit
Looking for an intense aerobic workout? In a group setting, cycle to heart-pumping tunes while climbing hills, sprinting and running.

5. Drop-in Classes
If you’re looking for flexible options, join one of our many drop-in classes. They are available to all members as well as U of T students who have paid the annual ancilliary fee. Check out our wide range of programs including recreational swimming, basketball, skating, badminton and hockey.
